The Rob Roy Cocktail is a simple drink that uses Scotch and sweet vermouth. Wikipedia says that, the Rob Roy Cocktail was “created in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria…” And that “the drink was named in honor of the premiere of an operetta.”
The other day I was cleaning out some cupboards and I came across a small cocktail recipe book. I flipped through the book to see if I wanted to keep it, and came upon a recipe for a Rob Roy Cocktail. Which made me smile and think that I couldn’t get rid of this little book.
Partly, because the Rob Roy always reminds me of this song, The Pump Room by The Friendly Indians. Which, after doing no research what-so-ever, I declare to be the only song ever to mention the Rob Roy.
Now, I’m not really a Scotch connoisseur. The first time I tasted Scotch was at my brother-in-law’s house back in 2012. I learned a lot about Scotch that evening. Bog, iodine, smoky peat. All these things are used to describe scotch. It’s a really interesting drink. And, I’m glad I learned a bit about it.
But, I have much more to learn! I can bring the bottle of Sweet Vermouth to make the Rob Roys.
