Poached Egg Tests – a review: comparing 5 different methods for poaching eggs. I completed all 5 poached egg tests, and actually I feel quite accomplished. I always thought poaching eggs was difficult. Now, I feel much more confident and I really don’t think poaching an egg is too terribly difficult or too time consuming.
I learned that you want to get all of your equipment and ingredients out before you start poaching the egg. They cook for a very short time, so you really don’t want to be fishing around looking for something when the egg is cooking.
I reviewed each egg individually on these points, so I thought I’d do a bit of a recap on the same points.
Shape: Julia child’s method (test 2) was beautiful! Round with a little yolk bump on top on the egg white. the Vortex (test 4) method was also really pretty. A tight little compact package. I’d want to make sure that I put these on top of whatever I was serving because they’re so nice to look at. The microwave (test 3) method would be my next choice for looks. Nice, not perfect or fabulous, but nice. The egg poacher (test 5) and the vinegar (test 1) methods would be tied for last place.
Taste: I think that the flavor of the vinegar just got in the way of the egg for me, so the simple vinegar and the vortex methods just don’t work as well for me. The other three were delish. Simple eggy goodness.
Yolk: (Keep in mind that I really like a runny yolk. Not everyone does though.) The Vortex edges out Julia Child’s method only by a hair. I suspect that as I do Julia’s method more often I’ll perfect the yolk. The microwave method is inconsistent, so if that lack of control bothers you, I don’t suggest it. But a harder yolk is great for a breakfast sandwich.
Ease of Cooking: Well, the microwave method wins, hands down here. No special equipment to get out. No waiting for water to boil. No separate timer needed. The egg poacher would be the next easiest way. The other three were pretty similar. Though with Julia’s method, there is the difficult part of taking the hot egg and cracking it. Not a huge ordeal though.
So, do I have a winner? Oh yeah!
It’s pretty easy for me to pick my favorite method of all of the tests that I did. There’s a clear winner in my book! Julia Child’s method produced the best looking and best tasting poached egg for me.
My runners up, and the ones I’ll probably continue do most often, are the microwave method and the egg poacher machine. The microwave may not be the most consistent (sometimes they’re runny and sometimes not), but it is the fastest, and easiest. And, if I want to do multiple eggs at a time, I love the egg poacher machine.
