I’m very excited to be participating in this first edition of Freaky Friday with a wonderful recipe for Homemade Onion Soup Mix from Honey & Birch! What’s Freaky Friday, you ask? Michaela at An Affair from the Heart came up with the idea for this old-fashioned blog hop.
In a nutshell Freaky Friday is … I’ve made and shared a recipe from Jenny at Honey & Birch, and she’s made a recipe from someone (a secret that I don’t know who it is yet), and she’s made a recipe from someone, and if you clicked through all the way around all 14 bloggers, you would get back to my blog. Jenny at Honey & Birch:
I recently met Jenny through Facebook, and have been very impressed with her recipes and yummy photos. She shares many of the same ideas about food as I do. Though she isn’t vegetarian, her recipes feature lots of whole foods, and very few processed foods or junk foods. She says in her About Section, “While we aren’t health nuts, I realized we were heading down the wrong path and I decided that I need to make a change.” Yep, I was there at one time too, eating out too often and wanting to eat better.
I looked through her fabulous collection of recipes and was really excited about her Homemade Onion Soup Mix. See, I’ve been thinking about one of my Childhood Favorites Remade for a while now, and Lipton Onion Soup Packets were one of the ingredients in the original main dish recipe. Well, now if Jenny has a homemade version of Onion Soup Mix, that fit perfectly into my plans!
The last recipe I posted was for Dried Apricot Jam, which is a homemade version of one of the ingredients in the final Childhood Favorites Remade main dish. Now, this Onion Soup Mix is the next ingredient in the final main dish. I have one more ingredient recipe to share, and then the main dish! I’m very excited about this one! And, if you want to jump ahead to the end, here’s the final dish: Italian Apricot Stew or Italian Apricot Chicken.
Jenny’s Homemade Onion Soup Mix can be used anywhere you might use one of those packets: in a crock-pot, a stew, a dip (just stir the soup mix into some sour cream), or even soup. When I was a kid, I used to come home from school and make those onion soup packets into soup and eat that as my after-school snack. Weird, I know! Of course, I can’t eat those packets anymore because they have beef (plus lots of weird ingredients) in them. I love that Jenny’s version is vegetarian and gluten-free.

- ½ cup dry onion flakes
- 3 teaspoons parsley flakes
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
- Combine all ingredients in a small bowl or jar with a tight fitting lid, and mix well. Store in an airtight container up to 2 months.
- Give it a good shake or stir before you measure, because the smaller spices will sink to the bottom. You'll need 5 tablespoons of Homemade Onion Soup Mix to replace the store-bought stuff.
- This mix makes about 32 teaspoons or 11 tablespoons worth.
