I thought I’d share a little Behind the Scenes look at Life Currents. Specifically, at some of my new backgrounds. You’ll also see several house projects (in the background) that we have going on!
We came home the other day, and one of the neighbors flagged my husband down. Dan went to talk to the neighbor, while I unpacked the car. When Dan came back I asked him what was up. Turns out, that the neighbor told Dan that there was a cabinet-maker going out of business down the street, and the cabinet-maker was selling off his wood supplies for super cheap prices. Dan said he knew he’d get in trouble if he bought more project materials without having anything to do with them. But, I immediately thought, but this is a great opportunity for me to get some new backgrounds for the blog! So, I gave Dan permission to get new project materials if I could get some. Win-win!
We hopped in the truck and took off. It was a huge warehouse that was mostly empty except for lots and lots of beautiful wood. Some was huge sheets, some cut into shapes, some broken, and some in nice beautiful boards. I felt like a kid in a candy store! We bought a whole truck-full of wood. Oak, pine, maple, I don’t even know what it all was. But, I can tell you it’s all beautiful. And, the neighbor was right, cheap!
I know many of my blogger friends look for new backgrounds to use, or buy vinyl sheets for their backgrounds. Wood may be a little heavier, but it’s really beautiful, and it shows up so nicely in photos. And, if you keep an eye out, there are some great bargains to be found out there!
Dan helped me (or more specifically, Dan did the work for me), in cutting the boards down to the size I wanted for backgrounds, and in trimming off any painted ends, marks, or decorative edges that I didn’t want on the boards. These boards are all the raw wood, no stain. I like the way the colors show up without any stain or varnish. I only sanded them lightly to get any marks off of them, or any splinter (my hands and arms are total splinter magnets!).
So, here’s some behind the scenes of the backgrounds, and how they look without food.
You’ll see all the boards eventually in the background of my food shots. For now, I’m trying to use only a few so the pictures all have a similar feel to them. (picture descriptions are below the picture)
A huge thanks to my husband for all his hard work on helping me with some new backgrounds for the blog! And, thanks to you for checking out this little behind the scenes tour of my new stuff! And remember, if always be on the lookout for cool stuff, you never know when or where it’s going to pop up!
Dan reminded me of a great tip! If you have a Habitat Restore near you (that’s Habitat for Humanity’s store where they sell donated goods and items they remove from homes including new and used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances), take a look and see what you can find there. They often have wood flooring and lumbar or even old doors that would look great as a background. And, you can pick stuff up there at a fraction of the cost of other places. Check here for locations.
